| イベント詳細 | The battle between geothermal energy production and eruptions at Krafla is a powerful geological story. Here, we present data from four different encounters between magma and geothermal wells at Krafla. We present some basic chemistry, petrology and volatile data to show that magma of surprising compositions lurks undetected at shallow depths, and that boreholes are very affective at sampling magma. The ability of magma to erupt through boreholes may depend on water content, viscosity, and technology. Remelting, and inequilibrium diffusion controlled processes dominate quenched glass and volatiles at shallow depths, indicating complex magmatic plumbing. We suggest that we can use these uniquely constrained magma encounters to improve our models of magma ascent and storage. We will also present the vision and potential for a Krafla magma testbed project and encourage opportunities for international collaboration and cooperation. Finally, we will present some examples of science communication projects that inspire the next generation are fun to be part of. |
