イベント名 第2回 地球惑星科学教室談話会
16 Years of LIDAR Expedition of the Space-Atmosphere System over Antarctica
イベント種類 セミナー
講演者(講師) Xinzhao Chu (Professor, Aerospace Engineering, Colorado University)
イベント詳細 McMurdo lidar observations made by the University of Colorado Boulder have been ongoing for 16 years since Dec 2010 in Antarctica. The high-resolution Na Doppler lidar and Fe Boltzmann lidar data have enabled numerous eye-opening science discoveries and some are transformative to advancing the space-atmosphere sciences. This seminar will introduce this legendary lidar campaign and present stunning results from the high-resolution lidar observations of vertical winds, temperatures, and metal Na and Fe species in the space-atmosphere system from McMurdo (77.84°S, 166.67°E), Antarctica. As lidar technologies continue progressing, we will show that lidars can routinely probe metal layers to nearly 200 km (in the nighttime only for now) and start to address some topics that are otherwise difficult to address with other observational methods. The McMurdo lidar observations have led to and are continued leading to numerous science discoveries, correcting long-held misunderstandings, and facilitating development of theories on multi-step vertical coupling, transport, and general circulation. The lidar observations, coupled with complementary observational and modeling studies, are providing crucial information for investigating the vertical coupling and formation mechanisms of thermosphere-ionosphere metal (TIMt) layers in the 100-200 km "thermospheric gap" region.
