イベント詳細 | In 2005 drilling in the Puna Geothermal Venture (PGV), in the Lower East Rift Zone (LERZ) of Kīlauea, Hawai’I, unexpectedly encountered magma at 2,488 metres below the surface. Although no eruption occurred, magma flowed ~8 m up the well and was returned to the surface as quenched glass chips containing phenocrysts of plagioclase feldspar, pyroxene, Fe-Ti oxides, and quartz. Previously published whole rock measurements of the chips gave dacite compositions, among the most evolved compositions recorded at Kīlauea. Then, in 2018, the LERZ eruption occurred around the PGV. The eruption produced a wide range of lava compositions, including some of the most differentiated compositions ever erupted at Kīlauea or any other Hawaiian volcano. I will be presenting the work my MSc student, Brianna Kirkham, has undertaken on the glass chips from the PGV encounter. She has measured the major elements, volatiles, and O and H isotopes of the glass. Their compositions are surprising and have implications for magma generation at basaltic volcanoes. I will also present the comparisons she has made between the magma drilled into in the LERZ and the magma that was erupted in the 2018 LERZ eruption, as well as magma that has been drilled into at Krafla, Iceland. |
