Upper atmospheric dynamics using multi-static specular meteor radar configurations

Abstract:
The upper atmospheric dynamics, particularly from altitudes between 60 and 105 km, have been routinely measured with ground-based radars in the last few decades. Radars can operate under all weather conditions. Depending on the radar target the temporal and seasonal coverage varies. In this seminar we will present results from standard specular meteor radars (SMRs), that are able to measure winds 24/7 and during all seasons between 75 and 105 km. A special emphasis will be devoted to an improved type of SMRs that is based on multistatic configurations and modern radar practices. This development is called SIMONe (Spread Spectrum Interferometric Multistatic meteor radar Observing Network) and has been developed at the Leibniz Institute of Atmospheric Physics in Germany in collaboration with the MIT Haystack Observatory and the University of Tromsø. We have replaced our
standard systems with SIMONe systems in Germany and Norway and since 2019 SIMONe systems have been installed in South America, specifically in Peru and Argentina. These systems are not only able to contribute to the studies of mean winds and large scales waves (e.g., planetary waves and tides), but also to mesoscale structures. We will present results from our systems located at high, mid and low latitudes, with a special emphasis on the Peru results.
