Abstract:
During the past three million years, as the result of periodic climate changes triggered by orbital changes and variations in greenhouse gases, large ice sheets waxed and waned in the Northern Hemisphere. The growth of ice sheets caused global average sea level to fall as low as 120 m below present, and impacted climate by changing the Earth's albedo and shifting atmospheric circulation. About 120,000 years ago, sea level was higher than present, caused by smaller ice sheets in a warmer climate. Over the subsequent 100,000 years, the ice sheets grew, covering large parts of northern North America and Europe. This culminated at the Last Glacial Maximum, about 20,000 years ago. In this presentation, I introduce the method I use to reconstruct past ice sheets and topography. The primary method to deduce the size of ice sheets it to model sea level change. In areas that were covered by ice sheets, the rate of sea level fall after ice sheets retreat can be used to infer the ice sheet size, while sea level in areas far from the ice sheet can be used to infer the overall global ice volume. I will demonstrate how changing topography affected the past climate of Eastern Asia.
